Looking at Spectators

Looking at Spectators is a triptych of a man standing at the glass looking out from his balcony. The centre image with the man shows a group of spectators cheering him on. I have used a subtle technique of painting - less tonal, with the only variation being different shades of black to grey. Also, the use of white spaces for me contributes to the frame-like composition, emphasising the documentary, slideshow format.

The image is influenced by Kara Walker’s style of using silhouettes, and how she is able to narrate stories poetically, but at the same time in ways that portray and provoke further meaning. I also draw reference from existing sports imagery which have a language and aesthetic of their own.
